Subject-Verb Agreement Quiz
Subject-Verb Agreement
Subject-verb agreement refers to the rule that the subject and verb in a sentence must agree in number (singular or plural). If the subject is singular, the verb must also be singular. If the subject is plural, the verb must also be plural.
- Example: The dog runs fast. (singular subject "dog", singular verb "runs")
- Example: The dogs run fast. (plural subject "dogs", plural verb "run")
Important Rule: If the subject is followed by "or" or "nor", the verb agrees with the nearest subject.
- Example: Neither the teacher nor the students were late. ("students" is closer to the verb, so we use the plural form "were")
